Daily monitoring of vaginal interleukin 6 as a predictor of intraamniotic inflammation after preterm premature rupture of membranes – a new method of sampling studied in a prospective multicenter trial

Abstract Objectives (A) To introduce a new technique for vaginal fluid sampling (biocompatible synthetic fiber sponge) and (B) evaluate the collected interleukine-6 (IL-6 vag )-concentration as diagnostic tool daily monitoring of intrauterine inflammation after preterm premature rupture membranes (PPROM). Secondary objectives were to compare potential predict an with established parameters (e.g., maternal white blood cell count). Methods This prospective clinical case-control accuracy multicenter study was performed women PPROM (gestational age 24.0/7 – 34.0/7 weeks). Sampling once daily. IL-6 determined by electrochemiluminescence-immunoassay-kit. Neonatal outcome placental histology results used retrospectively allocate cohort into two subgroups: 1) 2) no (controls). Results A total 37 cases included in final analysis. (A): Measurement successful 86% 172 samples. (B): Median concentration last sample before delivery significantly higher within group (17,085 pg/mL) compared controls (1,888 pg/mL; p=0.01).
